Discover Garlic & Chives #2

If you’re cruising down South Street in Artesia and craving bold Vietnamese flavors with a modern twist, Garlic & Chives #2 at 11612 South St, Artesia, CA 90701, United States is the kind of spot you don’t just visit once-you keep coming back. I’ve eaten here several times over the past year, both for casual lunches and family dinners, and each visit has delivered the same thing: vibrant dishes, consistent quality, and a menu that balances tradition with creativity.

The first thing that stands out is the aroma. Fresh herbs, grilled meats, garlic sizzling in hot oil-it hits you before you even open the menu. Speaking of the menu, it’s extensive without feeling overwhelming. You’ll find Vietnamese staples like pho, bun, and rice plates, but what really sets this place apart are their house specialties. The shaken beef (bo luc lac) arrives tender and caramelized, served over crisp greens and perfectly seasoned rice. Their garlic noodles, glossy and fragrant, are a must-order side that pairs beautifully with grilled shrimp or lemongrass chicken.

From a culinary perspective, what they’re doing here makes sense. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly look for bold global flavors and authentic ingredients, and Vietnamese cuisine consistently ranks among the top Asian food trends in the U.S. The heavy use of fresh herbs like Thai basil and cilantro, combined with umami-rich sauces such as fish sauce and oyster sauce, creates depth without heaviness. That balance-fresh yet savory-is something chefs and food writers often praise in Vietnamese cooking, including coverage from organizations like the James Beard Foundation that highlight Southeast Asian cuisine’s growing influence.

On one visit, I brought a friend who’s notoriously picky about pho. He studies broth the way some people study wine. He immediately noticed the clarity and aroma of the soup here. A good pho broth takes hours of simmering beef bones with spices like star anise and cinnamon, carefully skimming impurities to achieve that clean finish. You can taste that process in every spoonful. It’s not overly salty, and it doesn’t rely on shortcuts. That level of execution doesn’t happen by accident-it reflects a kitchen that understands technique.

The service has also been consistently attentive. During a busy Saturday night, our server walked us through the menu, suggesting a combination of small plates and larger entrees so we could share family-style. That approach turned a simple dinner into a full tasting experience: crispy egg rolls with a crackling exterior, a fresh papaya salad with just enough chili heat, and a seafood platter layered with garlic butter and scallions. Each dish came out in steady rhythm, not rushed but not slow either.

When it comes to ambiance, this Artesia location feels polished yet comfortable. It’s not a quiet, candlelit diner; instead, it’s lively and social. Families, date-night couples, and groups of friends fill the tables. The décor blends contemporary touches with subtle nods to Vietnamese culture. Clean lines, warm lighting, and an open dining layout make it feel welcoming without being chaotic.

Online reviews frequently mention generous portions and presentation, and I can confirm both. Plates are colorful and thoughtfully arranged, which matters more than people realize. Research from Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab has shown that presentation can significantly influence perceived taste. Here, the bright herbs, vibrant sauces, and neatly arranged proteins genuinely enhance the overall experience.

It’s worth noting that peak hours can mean a short wait, especially on weekends. Parking around South Street can also get tight during busy times. Still, the turnover is efficient, and the staff handles crowds with professionalism. In terms of pricing, it sits comfortably in the mid-range category for Orange County and Los Angeles County dining, offering solid value given the portion sizes and ingredient quality.

Overall, this location stands out among Vietnamese restaurants in the area because it respects tradition while embracing creativity. The flavors are bold but balanced, the service is reliable, and the menu offers enough variety to keep regulars curious. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick lunch bowl or settling in for a full dinner spread, the experience feels intentional and well-crafted every single time.

  • I'm so thrilled this location opened in Cerritos. I would drive down to OC to its original location. Personally, think this location is better. It's spacious and modern. There's also a private dining area you can reserve. Great friendly service The menu selection is vast with lots of seafood options. So happy to have some modern traditional vietnamese closer to home versus driving out to OC.

  • Wow the food was so good. We started off with the Pomelo Salad. The dish was so bright and citrusy and sweet and acidic. An amazing balance of flavors and textures. Especially with the fried rice cracker. Next up was the toothpick lamb. Another 5/5. Each bite was a great balance of char and spices. It gave such a nice kick while having that delicious gamey lamb flavor. Then we got the Holy Fried Chicken. The texture of the skin was crackly and crunchy and the sauce was sweet and sticky. And finally we got the grilled scallop with masago. The scallop was sweet and delicious but downing it all in one shot including the juices sitting at the bottom is a must.

  • The Vietnamese food here is amazing. Chef Kristen’s dishes are creative and versatile. You can get acidic, sweet, salty, umami all in a single meal. The portions are perfect and the food is so fresh. Highly recommend going with multiple people so you can dine family style and try as many dishes as possible.

  • Service was great. Refilled the water and was attentive to our group. We tried a few dishes. We had the garlic noodles with shrimp. That was good. Also tried the salt and pepper calamari. It’s good but caution about it being spicy. We also tried a few different salads which was refreshing. The decor was nice and pretty. I think it’s a nice place to take a date. Weds evening there wasn’t too many people which was nice.

  • Met the owner while we dined here. Food was excellent and one of the best Asian cuisine in the area. We had a party of 13 also and place accommodated well!

  • First time coming to this branch, but always coming back here moving forward! Shorter lines and the restaurant itself is newer, cleaner. Plus all the dishes are on point in terms of flavor and texture. Recommend the papaya salad, calamari and lamb dishes!
